Buggy and short

:
It's a nice idea but at the price I expect something longer that doesn't have multiple bugs where you don't get items or gold you are supposed to. If this was 1$ I'd likely say it's worth 3 stars, and 4 if it was lacked the blatantly obvious bugs. And I'd still give 4 stars at 2$ if it was bug free.

But since this is part of a series, the cost is too high and quality too low.

Mixed feelings on this one...

:
First off, the source material is a top-notch Fighting Fantasy novel - the first in a great series of four books by Steve Jackson (who wrote many of the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks) and it's great to have another Fighting Fantasy novel avaliable to play on the iPhone/iPod Touch. This is the first FF book that lets you play as a sorcerer, complete with spells to use, which makes the game that much more interesting.

This version also contains the entire Sorcery! Spellbook which is a nice bonus. (It was originally a separate book.) This is the first and easiest of the Sorcery! books.

That being said, I find myself not liking the interface presented here anywhere near as much as the Adventure Gamebooks series, or the other Fighting Fantasy novels on the iPhone, and here's why:

1) There's a back button. While you could flip backwards in the books in real life, it took a lot out of the game. Since references that have you turn back have a "forward" button that does this, the back button is redundant. (You can even back out of the game over page.)

2) Game logic buttons, item use and stat changes are akward. Game buttons show as all selectable even though they aren't - in other apps you can only click on links that apply. It's strange that stat changes (such as when you lose stamina for starving) go by silently, but when you use an item you have to click through several akwardly worded popups to confirm that you want to use (and then used) the items (even when you aren't "using and item" per se.

3) Dice animation is actually movie clips, which take a moment to load and transition to/from. Some dice rolls (like luck) don't get animated for some reason. They are quick, though - fast enough that I don't find myself wanting to skip them.

4) Sound is mediocre. Sure, this is a book, and you won't miss the sound at all. The default sound for turning a page is irritating IMHO, and it's very welcome when there is a kaching or other noise associated with the link. There is some nice background music at some points, but it doesn't loop well, restarting abruptly. Inns and other situations have appropriate background noise, which is nice.

5) The gallery section has all the images in the game, which is good - but I wish they unlocked them as you saw them. It's kind of dissapointing to see them early - go play the game a bit before checking it out.

Hope this doesn't sound too negative - if you're a fan of the Fighting Fantasy novels, you will probably want to get this, but I'd place the other FF apps by Big Blue Bubble and Gamebook Adventures by Tin Man Games over this one, especially for the price.

2/5 stars
Way to short

:
Sheesh, 5 bucks for a game I completed in less than a half hour, was interesting but, replayable?
Doesn't offer much bang for the buck and I have deleted it and won't be coming back for more!
